Pierre Benard, Ph.D., phys.

Professeur, Département de Physique

Biographie

Pierre Bénard (Ph.D) is Professor of Physics at the department of physics of the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières and a member of the Hydrogen Research Institute. He holds a PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics from the Université de Sherbrooke and a M.Sc from the University of Toronto. His Ph.D. thesis was on the magnetic properties of the normal phase of high temperature superconductors. His research activities are geared towards the development of functional materials for new energy applications, specifically nanoporous materials and safety issues pertaining to the use of hydrogen. His research interests include statistical physics simulations for adsorption phenomena on nanostructures, thermodynamic modeling of adsorption systems and computer fluid dynamics studies of the dispersion of gases. He is involved in storage and safety issues for hydrogen energy technologies. He is a Canadian expert on task 19 of the Hydrogen Implementing agreement of the International Energy Agency and a member of the IPHE Virtual School Faculty Club.

Intérêts de Recherche
  • Physisorption of gases on carbon nanostructures and metal organic frameworks for storage and purification.
  • Modeling of storage systems.
  • Modeling of jets (outflow calculation and concentration profiles) in the presence of surfaces.
  • Use of computer fluid dynamics (finite volume methods) to estimate the extent and the shape of clouds of gaseous fuels (hydrogen and methane in particular) as a function of time, degree of obstruction, confinement and ventilation (dispersion dynamics).
  • Calculation of the consequences resulting from the accidental ignition of hydrogen releases: estimation  of the physical properties (thermal flux, overpressure) of releases using numerical and analytical methods as well as engineering correlations.
